Discussing the future of democracy is of great importance for students in Saxony and students in England, especially against the backdrop of current political developments such as the rise of the AfD in Germany, the rise of the neo-Nazi group "Junge Tat" in Switzerland and the emphasis on nationalism by the Brexit in England. The rise of the AfD in Germany and Brexit in England mark important turning points in the political landscape of both countries. These developments raise questions and challenges, such as how to deal with populist movements, the role of identity politics and the future of European integration.Students from political science and social science programmes in particular should address these challenges in order to develop a deeper understanding of the functioning and limits of democratic systems, as well as to critically question cultural structural patterns and discuss the opportunities of an intercultural approach. After all, the political developments in Germany and England not only have national but also international repercussions. Brexit, for example, had (and still has) far-reaching implications for future relations between the UK and the European Union, as well as for the global political balance. Students should understand the impact of such events on international relations, economics and culture in order to better grasp their role as future actors in a globalised world. Examining the future of democracy provides an opportunity to emphasize the importance of cosmopolitanism and intercultural exchange
The course is designed as an online event (3 dates a 90 Minutes ) over the winter semester and will culminate in a three-day Winter School in Dresden in February 2025.
